In 1926, an artist named Theodore Lukits painted Dolores Del Rio, the luminous Mexican beauty, who insisted on being painted along with her pet monkey. Titled A Souvenir of Seville, the life-size portrait depicted the actress in the dress worn for her presentation to the Spanish Court. The painting was exhibited at the premiere of The Loves of Carmen (1927) and received extensive publicity in the United States and Mexico, helping make Lukits a very sought-after painter in Los Angeles in the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s.
